Sainsbury’s Local stores are the smallest in the Sainsbury’s estate; typically around 4,500 sq ft gross (3,000 sq ft sales). They provide local people with quality, fresh, affordable food within walking distance of their homes and for those needing to top up their shopping.

We are actively pursuing new sites to expand our convenience store portfolio across the UK. We have one of the strongest covenants in the marketplace and a strong track record of working in partnership with agents, developers and landlords to open new stores.

Through this website, we want to give property professionals a clear picture of our requirements and how to work with us to deliver new convenience stores.

We also want to highlight some of the reasons why we believe a Sainsbury’s Local can make a valuable contribution to the high streets and city centres of Britain.

Local benefits

Our convenience stores make a positive difference to local communities and we make sure we connect our business to the local area.

Our convenience stores create job opportunities, increase footfall which benefits both existing and new businesses, and support and work with local charities across the UK.

The difference we have made

“We recently worked with Sainsbury’s on a letting on the Strand. They worked efficiently and adhered to the allotted time schedule, whilst continually keeping us informed and communicating their progress to us. Overall, it was a well-executed process and we enjoyed working with Sainsbury’s.”
Tim Allibone,
Asset Management Director, Land Securities

“It is refreshing to work alongside a fully engaged team who recognise the need to work together with landowners and developers to ensure the aims and objectives for all parties are met. We have found the Sainsbury’s Convenience team responsive, pragmatic and professional in their approach at every level.”
Roger Ahmed,
Director, UK & Maine

”I have been working with Sainsbury's convenience team and their external consultants to deliver a number of stores over the last four years in Scotland. The approach adopted from each member of their team, from site identification through to handover is always professional, structured, and when necessary pragmatic in overcoming any obstacles that arise through the process. From a developer perspective it is most refreshing to work on this basis, and I look forward to this trusted relationship continuing as Sainsbury's roll out their convenience format in Scotland.”
