Sainsbury’s withdraws regeneration plans for Bath Western Riverside

Sainsbury’s withdrew its planning application for Bath Western Riverside in November 2013 in order to respond to feedback. The application included a replacement Sainsbury’s foodstore, 280 new homes, office and creative employment space, and enhancement of public areas including riverside landscaping.

The planning application was registered in June 2013 and was due to be determined in October that year. Having received the vast majority of consultation responses, Sainsbury’s took the decision to withdraw its application and address the feedback received. The team is also talking to BANES about their local master plan and hope to resubmit a revised scheme shortly.

Michael Adenmosun, Portfolio Development Manager, said: “This is a complex proposal with many different elements. In a City such as Bath, it is challenging to reconcile the wide-ranging issues and interests involved and we are not in the least bit surprised that a major development of this nature has attracted a high level of feedback.

“The most important thing is that we continue to work with everyone with an interest in the development in moving towards a scheme that satisfactorily addresses all the planning issues. We are confident this is achievable and are encouraged by the high levels of support that we have received during our lengthy public consultation process. We are also encouraged by the fact that our intended uses for the site have not attracted objections in principle.

“We remain committed to working with the Council to help it achieve its regeneration aspirations for Bath Western Riverside and the expansion of the City Centre, providing an improved shopping offer for our customers and delivering wider regeneration for Bath residents and the local economy.

“We aim to publicly consult on revised proposals in the near future in preparation for a fresh planning application.”
