At Sainsbury’s we’re proud to Make a Positive Difference to our Communities. Our Local Charity of the Year programme, our Food Donation Partnerships and encouraging our colleagues to be actively involved in the communities in which we live and work are all a crucial part of making this happen. Our new Brand Walls, which you’ll be able to see going up in store this week, outline some of our targets and achievements around supporting our local charities and communities across the country – as well as giving a big thanks to our colleagues and customers for their ongoing support.
With the help of both colleagues and customers this year we are involved in over 3000 charitable partnerships. We work with both national charities such as Comic Relief and the Royal British Legion, and charities and community groups local to our stores across the country. All of these partnerships play an important role in our business and are highly valued by both customers and colleagues.
In 2009 we founded our Local Charity of the Year programme. The programme gives our customers the opportunity, once a year, to choose which local charity their store will support for that year. In June 2016 the programme received its highest ever number of customer votes, with more than 1.9 million votes cast in support of local charities, an increase of 440% from 2015. If you would like to see a full list of the charities we support, including our Food Donation Partners, click here.
We want to take the opportunity to thank our customers for their ongoing support and charitable giving.
Thanks to your donations we’re able to make a difference right across the UK by donating millions of pounds to charity every year.
We are always looking at ways to reduce waste within our business, but it is also important to us that any waste we do have is used positively. Our Food Donation Partnerships programme helps us to ensure surplus food is donated to charities wherever possible. We have both front of store Food Donation Partnerships which are customer-led, and back of store Food Donation Partnerships which are led by our stores and tied in with our food waste reduction programme.
We are very proud to have been donating surplus food to charities across the UK since 1998 and this year we have seen a huge increase in stores working with charities. Currently 8 out of 10 of our supermarkets*, and 6 out of 10 of our convenience stores, have Food Donation Partnerships. However, we are working hard to make sure all our stores have a Food Donation Partnerships creating a strong and sustainable network. You can find out more about our food donation programme and how we’re addressing food waste across the business at: http://www.j-sainsbury.co.uk/blog/2016/2016/09/mike-coupe-food-waste-down-94perc-year-on-year-but-theres-still-lots-to-do/
Our colleagues are all superheroes! They work hard every day to lend a helping hand to customers and to support local charities and the communities around our stores.
We would like to thank them publicly for all the work they do.
