At Sainsbury’s we take environmental issues seriously. We aim to be environmentally responsible in the way we run our business and we also want to make it easy for customers to be environmentally responsible.
Climate change represents one of the greatest challenges we face, both as a business and as a global population. We recognise that tackling the issue involves addressing both our direct and indirect impacts. We are working hard to reduce our operational footprint and we continue to develop a better understanding of the carbon embodied in our products and in the construction of our buildings.
Managing resources that we use directly in our operations and through our supply chain, such as water, continues to be a key concern. We have continued to improve our performance and are working with suppliers to identify best practice (see ‘Sourcing with integrity’).
Waste, packaging and recycling are also important issues for both us and our customers and we champion the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ approach. We not only want to minimise the waste we produce but also the waste in our customers’ homes. Our substantial progress in reducing the amount of food waste we send to landfill shows that waste can be put to important alternative uses. We believe that waste is a valuable resource and that landfill is the least desired option.

Packaging and recycling
We work hard to ensure that the amount and type of packaging we use is appropriate.
