Andy Phelps, Category Manager for Beers, Wines and Spirits, has been awarded Ethical Person of the Year at the Drinks Business Green Awards 2013.
The prestigious title was awarded for Andy’s commitment to Fairtrade and for the impact he has had across the ethically sourced drinks across Sainsbury’s. This includes the 20 by 20 initiative to 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan to reach sales of £1 billion fairly-traded products.
Harriet Lamb from Fairtrade International said: "This bold commitment will drive significant change for farmers and workers in developing countries. Sainsbury's level of ambition to play their part in tackling poverty will set the pace - enabling the public to make Fairtrade an integral part of people's everyday shopping, opening more doors for more farmers and workers. Critically Sainsbury's is building on an already impressive track record, from switching all their bananas to Fairtrade five years ago, driving opportunities for new producers to access Fairtrade through the Sainsbury's Fair Development Fund, and leading groundbreaking relationship-building initiatives such as annual conferences for Fairtrade suppliers in Africa".
Andy Phelps said: “I am really honoured to receive this award. Ethical sourcing is at the heart of Sainsbury’s commitment to responsible sourcing. We’ve committed to increasing our sales of fairly traded products to £1billion by 2020 and I am delighted that the BWS team are helping to making our commitment a reality.”
