Notes to graph
Sainsburys
Supermarkets donation for 2000/01 consists of approximately 984 tonnes
from 63 stores to Crisis Fareshare; 1,109 tonnes from 71 stores to other
charities; and 250 tonnes from 16 stores to animal sanctuaries. The tonnages
are currently based on best estimates of total store waste, and we are
continuing to improve accuracy.
Sainsburys
Supermarkets cardboard recycling figures decreased compared to last year
and the decrease is again due to more accurate data gathering, plus some
products have been moved out of cardboard boxes into reusable crates.
Sainsburys
Supermarkets composting trial has expanded and does not include all participating
stores for a whole year.
Sainsburys
Supermarkets data include Savacentre, and are for solid waste only, and
no records were obtained for special waste. In some instances, where data
are incomplete, some assumptions have been made.

Shaws data
Shaws
waste disposal data showing 67,496 tonnes (74,402 tons) are calculated
from an average skip weight and average number of lifts per store/year
for the period 1 January to 31 December 2000.
Shaws
diversion data are derived from 171 participating stores and comprise
40,613 tonnes (44,768 tons) of cardboard and 1,105 tonnes (1,218 tons)
of plastic. Plastics diversion figures are derived from estimates based
on four months of income data. Cardboard recycling data is based on the
calendar year 1 January to 31 December 2000.
For
US data purposes, 1 ton equals 2000 lbs.
The
data do not include 19 recently purchased Grand Union stores
