Sainsbury's recognised as "the considerate builder"

Sainsbury's was awarded one silver and three bronze awards by the Considerate Constructors Scheme for works completed during 2002. The extension and refurbishment of Sainsbury's Horsham supermarket was given a silver award, whilst the extension at Lincoln and the new supermarkets at Hazelgrove, Manchester and Bretton, Peterborough were given bronze awards.

All contractors working Sainsbury's building projects over £1 million must register with the Considerate Constructors Scheme to ensure minimum disturbance to the local community. This is part of Sainsbury's standard terms and conditions for new developments.

The scheme, which started five years ago, aims to reduce negative impact of noise, dust and inconvenience of building projects on the local community as well as eradicating offensive behaviour and language often associated with building sites.

Sainsbury's is one of the most frequent clients on the Considerate Constructor Scheme, and the largest private client, with 82 instances where the site has registered. This is about four times more than the nearest retail competitor.
