    • We have continued to reduce energy consumption relative to floor area. We are now using 5.8% less energy per square metre than we were in 1997/98. We are committed to spending £14½ million capital investment on energy saving installations.

    • We have continued to deliver big improvements in our supply chain, saving the equivalent of 5.2 million kilometres in the last year and the emission of 4,750 tonnes of CO2. In the last three years we have saved the equivalent of 17.6 million kilometres (over 10%), while deliveries have increased by 9.4%.

    • We have won four awards by the Considerate Constructors Scheme for works completed during 2002 in the building or refurbishment of Sainsbury's Supermarkets stores.

    • Shaw's gained the top award for businesses in the Clean Air - Cool Planet Climate Champion Awards 2003 "demonstrating true leadership in greenhouse gas emissions reductions and in spreading a positive message of the need for climate action to their constituencies and their peers."

    • All its environmental targets were met during the year.
      New targets concentrate on continuing to reduce paper usage through the business and Head Office waste.

    General

    We were rated in the top group of companies in a new business survey on corporate responsibility conducted by Business in the Community.

    We were also rated as the leading retailer, for the fourth year running, in the Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement conducted by Business in the Environment.
