2002/03 Targets Progress   2003/04 Targets
1. By March 2003, survey all own-brand suppliers to ensure they are reducing their environmental impacts through a programme of continuous improvement, and increase the number of environmentally conscious products offered for sale.

Achieved.

88.9% of respondents indicated their firms practiced environmental stewardship of products, processes and services, and 75.8% of respondents indicated their firms had appointed a manager with specific environment responsibility. Additional compact fluorescent bulbs were offered for sale in September and October 2002, working with local utilities and the Environmental Protection Agency’s "Change A Light, Change the World Program".

Target achieved

1. By March 2004, work with own-brand suppliers who indicated they did not have environmental stewardship programs and managers to influence them to integrate these into their businesses.

1a) By March 2004, include the survey as part of initial audit of future vendors.

2. Participate in the Change a Light Program in October and offer additional environmentally conscious products through Wild Harvest.

Shaw’s products sub-targets
1a) By March 2003, identify suppliers who are members of Forest and Marine Stewardship Councils and opportunities for introduction of new certified own-brand lines.

Partially achieved.

Irving Paper is Forest Stewardship Council certified.

Partially achieved
2. Continue to increase the number of products that are independently certified.

Achieved.

Third party endorsed products introduced, EPA energy star labels received and Green-e certified energy purchases made.

Target achieved
3. By March 2003, investigate ways to reduce miles travelled while putting logistics changes in place to accommodate additional stores and compensate for the loss of existing distribution centres.

Achieved.

A like-for-like reduction in miles traveled of 900,000 miles was realized due to distribution center location efficiencies.

Target achieved 3. By March 2004, to reduce the miles travelled in like-for-like stores by 300,000 miles while still achieving targeted product availability.
4. By March 2003, replace 16 HCFC trailers with HFC trailers and by March 2006 eliminate remaining HCFC trailers and replace with HFC trailers.

Achieved and on Target.

16 trailers replaced. Remaining HCFC trailers will be eliminated by 2006.

Target achieved 4. Eliminate all HCFC trailers by 2006.

5. 5% of energy used to be from renewable resources by 2005, and 10% by 2010, providing feasible sources are available.

5a) New target: By March 2003, obtain 5 additional Energy Star Labels for targeted locations and work with independent energy and environmental agencies to provide products and information services to customers.

Progressing.

Working with agencies in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

7 additional Energy Star Labels were obtained; at least one store in every New England state now has a label. Brochures for renewable energy purchases were made available in three Rhode Island stores and information is available on the web site.

Target in progress 5. No change.
6. Design heating ventilation and air conditioning systems in at least five stores by March 2003 that will include multiple compressors and variable volume/demand ventilation controls to reduce HVAC energy consumption by 5%.

Partially achieved.

Four stores' main HVAC units operate with multiple compressors and two stage supply fans. Several stores employ variable ventilation (hood controls). Energy consumption has been reduced by 5% and reductions in size of HVAC units have been achieved.

Partially achieved 6. By March 2004, work more closely with suppliers to design an optimum HVAC system to minimize capacity and maximize operating efficiencies. Utilise experience to further reduce the size of air conditioning units by 10%.
7. Reduce CO2/ft2 by an additional 5% through 2005 from a baseline of 1996.

Progressing.

Additional energy reduction measures put in place during year.

Target in progress 7. No change.
8. By March 2003 confirm 10% reduction in waste and damaged product at warehouse from the five top offending vendors.

Partially achieved.

This is a continuing operation to monitor damaged and returned goods.

Partially achieved
9. By March 2003 investigate mechanisms to estimate the volume of primary packaging in own-brand products to set future reduction targets.

Not achieved.

Target missed 8. Evaluate applicability of adapting own-brand product packaging reduction program used by Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd., to US marketplace.
10. By March 2003 investigate options for maximising materials recycling through the chain.

Achieved.

Currently piloting an organics waste diversion program (composting) in six stores with plans to increase participation where infrastructure allows.

Additional recycling programs have been added at store support centre, distribution centres (plastic product supports on pallets) and stores.

Target achieved 9. By March 2004, to reduce waste volume by 20% in at least six stores, through the use of a composting scheme.
11. By March 2003 eliminate CFCs from stores and the distribution fleet, and install refrigerant management systems in stores where not currently available.

Partially achieved.

Final store location will be replaced during 2003. CFCs removed from distribution fleet. 90% of store locations now have leak detection equipment and remaining stores will have systems installed during the upcoming development program.

Partially achieved 11. By March 2006, eliminate CFCs from remaining two stores as part of the Master Development Schedule and install refrigerant leak detection systems in 20 additional locations.
