Our values

Our five values provide the framework for how we do business at Sainsbury's. They guide us in everything we do - from key business decisions to day-to-day activities.

Our approach

We have a clear vision: to be the most trusted retailer, where people love to work and shop.

Our goal is to make all our customers’ lives easier every day by offering great quality and service at fair prices. Our values are critical to achieving this. Our customers trust Sainsbury’s to do the right thing, and expect us to maintain high social, ethical and environmental standards.

Our values are part of what make us different from other supermarkets, so we see this as a strength, as well as a responsibility. Our promise to help customers Live Well for Less is about more than just price. Our values are integral to our relationships with suppliers, colleagues and other stakeholders. We aim to ensure they differentiate us from our competitors and give us a real commercial advantage. Our values are:

20x20 2013 update

Best for food and health

We serve over 25 million customers each week and play a key role in helping them Live Well For Less. Being best for food and health involves making it economical and easy for our customers to enjoy a healthier, balanced lifestyle, providing specialist health services and promoting activity. We have been part of the Department of Health’s Responsibility Deal from the outset, building on our work over a number of years to make our food healthier.

20x20 commitments

Sourcing with integrity

Consumers care about the provenance of the goods they buy and the integrity of the companies they spend their money with. They put their trust in us to do the right thing throughout our buying process, so sourcing with integrity is key in our dealings with farmers, growers and suppliers in the UK and around the world.

Respect for our environment

The scale of our business means we can make a massive difference by ensuring respect for our environment is embedded in our decision making. We aim to be the UK’s greenest grocer and look to act sustainably, address climate change and conserve resources. Our focus is not simply on reducing our impact on the environment but on having a net positive effect including using our leadership position to engage our suppliers and others to do the same.

Making a positive difference to our community

We want to make a positive difference to the communities we’re part of. With over 1,100 stores across the UK, 21 depots and 3 store support centres employing 157,000 colleagues, we set out to get involved and be a good neighbour.

A great place to work

Our success rests upon the 161,000 colleagues working in our stores, depots and offices who provide great service to our customers every day. Motivated, involved and engaged colleagues are fundamental to our continued success. We’re committed to giving people the opportunity to be the best they can be.
