British farmers are under pressure from rising costs, the impacts of climate change and water scarcity and competition from around the world.
The challenge is to work more closely with British farmers to provide high-quality, seasonal and local food. This will support a vital industry that we have always championed and match our customers' expectations to be able to buy high-quality fresh British food.
By 2020, we'll double the amount of British food we sell.

Our commitment to providing great-tasting British products means offering them when they are in season, and at their best. In many cases we buy a particularly large share of the entire British crop, for instance we sell more British pears than any other retailer and sell one quarter of all British apples. Many of our products are 100 per cent British all year round, such as our fresh chicken, eggs and fresh and UHT milk.

We work with over 3,000 British farmers through our Development Groups and Crop Sustainability Groups. These help the farmers who supply our business to become more efficient and make their operations more sustainable in the long term, while ensuring the products they produce are of the best quality for Sainsbury's customers.

Customer demand for regional and local products continues to grow, especially as customers wish to support their local economy in the current economic climate. Our regional teams, with buying offices in Scotland, Northern Ireland and England, continue to look for the best regional products from local suppliers.
