Deforestation is responsible for around 20 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions (UNEP).
It causes irreversible damage to the natural habitat of many species vital for sustaining life on earth. Unsustainable logging practices and the destruction of forests for farming threaten to remove the earth's natural breathing system. The challenge is not only to stop this damage but also help to restore forest cover.
By 2020, our own brand products won't contribute to global deforestation.

I can see Sainsbury is thinking of the future, but 2020 is 8 long years away. One of my concerns is about the use of palm oil in so many products. This is affecting environment and wildlife in Indonesia as so many forests there are being logged. Some of the wildlife such as the orangutans may not survive by 2020 at the rate they are losing their habitat or being killed because of palm oil plantations. With this in mind, and sustainable palm oil now fully available, will it be used exclusively in your own label products this year?

Hi Yvonne - thank you for commenting. All of the palm oil in our own label products is now certified sustainable by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) or certified through the Green Palm scheme. We're committed to 100% RSPO certified sustainable palm oil by 2014.
